Bayelsa NUJ to partner Federal Road Safety Corps for safer roads

Bayelsa State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed its determination to partner with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to ensure safer roads in the state.

 The State Chairman, Comrade Samuel Numonengi made the assertion when the State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mr Chidiebere Nkwonta paid a courtesy visit to the leadership of the Council at the NUJ Press Centre in Yenagoa.

Comrade Numonengi who reaffirms the union stance to collaborate with the FRSC to ensure road accident free in the state to enable the corps achieve its statutory obligations, through adequate reportage, and  commended the command for getting traders off major roads in the state as well as  promptly responding to distress situations.

He called on the FRSC to intensify its efforts at enlightening members of the public on road safety tips, saying people learn a lot from the corps' programme on radio and television.

Earlier, the Sector Commander, Mr. Chediebere Nkwonta had called on journalists to support the command's efforts to ensure safer roads in the state through the dissemination of it activities.

According to Nkwonta, the command is working tirelessly to enlighten and re-orientate members of the public on road safety behaviour, noting however that much success would not be achieved without adequate media coverage which will bring about attitudinal change.

The sector Commander, who disclosed that no fatal road accident was recorded in the state in the past two months, added that efforts would be sustained in sensitising people so that the roads will become safer for everyone.

He applauded the friendly posture of the media in the state towards the Corps and called for it sustenance.
