The Technical Adviser to the Bayelsa State Governor on Print Media and Public Affairs, Comrade Wisdom Oniekpar Ikuli, has decried poor rewards system for indigenous Newspaper Publishers in the state.

Comrade Ikuli who made the assertion on Wednesday, while addressing indigenous Newspaper Publishers in Yenagoa, stressed the need to provide adequate rewards system for Bayelsa Indigenous Newspapers Publishers to spur them to do more for the betterment of the state.
Highlighting the role of print media in societal development, Comrade Ikuli said, print media plays a central role in the development and transformation of a society.
This, he said, is through its communication process which centres on enormous amounts of information that shapes new values, costumes and ideas at emerging society.
He added that the print media is a powerful instrument that influences and often promotes new positive standards in society.
Describing it as a vehicle for development and communication, he said, the print media has the potential to create awareness and motivation for development and change by promoting both individual and communal interest in society, pointing out that it’s an indispensable source of development.
Comrade Ikuli who emphasized that no society can move forward devoid of information and communication, lamented over the poor conditions of newspaper publishers in the state, despite their huge contributions uplifting so many in society.
“Journalists put so much for the development and growth of society, but they are not rewarded.
I am aware how journalists all over the world are treated. But, here in Bayelsa state seems to be the worse because a lot of our members are sick but no tangible attention has been given.
There is poor welfare system for indigenous newspaper publishers. I am not indicting and institutions,” he stated.
He stressed the necessity to accord high premium to the welfare of publishers and boost their status in society.
He applauded them for their tireless contributions to the development of the state through their various medium and charged them not to relent.
Comrade Ikuli used the forum to charge practicing journalists and the media, henceforth to publish positive stories about the state devoid of negativity.
He said emphatically that the era of publishing negative or sensational stories deliberately aimed at damaging the good image of the state despite its existing peaceful atmosphere to attracting investors and businessmen into the state is over.
Ikuli who described Bayelsa as the most peaceful state in the country commended the Governor of the state, Senator Douye Diri for his proven track record of performance and tireless commitment to the infrastructural development, peace, security and even distribution of social amenities to all the nooks and crannies of the state to improve the socio-economic well-being of the people.
He further lauded the Governor for his unprecedented achievements in all sectors of the economy and described him as a ‘God’s sent Governor’ to salvage the people from the shackle of poverty, deprivation and underdevelopment.
Meanwhile, the Technical Adviser to the Governor on Print Media and Public Affairs, Comrade Wisdom Oniekpar Ikuli, on Thursday toured round part of the state with Bayelsa State Indigenous Newspaper Publishers to showcase the outstanding road projects constructed by the prosperity administration led by Senator Douye Diri.
