Bayelsa Agric Commissioner unveils his Ministry’s 6years achievements
Bayelsa State Commissioner for Agriculture and
Natural Resources, Mr. Duode Week has unfolded the score card of his ministry
under the Restoration Government for the last six years.
Mr. Week disclosed this during the
Inter-Ministerial/Agency briefing at Gabriel Okara Cultural Centre Yenagoa.
Highlighting
the achievements of his ministry, he said efforts are been made to boost its
internal revenue through fish production and exportation.
He noted that in addition to the 500 fish
ponds at Yenegwe, Government has engaged Isrealis Companies to established
modern fish ponds expected to be completed by the end of this year.
According to commissioner the restoration
government of Governor Seriake Dickson has done greatly by revamping the
agricultural sector and trained youths.
The Commissioner
who expressed regret that the country was spending 2.5Million dollars on
importation of fish annually, observed that with the facilities been put in
place, the state has the capacity to export fish to the market.
He listed the investments in agricultural
sector to include cassava industrialization project, empowerment of women and
youths in collaboration with the Federal Government under the Agricultural
Development Programme (ADP), Youth training programmes under the N-Power Scheme
with 112 beneficiaries.
Others include establishment of modern abattoir and completion of veterinary
hospital among others.
In his opening remarks, the Commissioner for
Information and Orientation, Mr. Daniel Iworiso- Markson noted that since the
Agricultural sector is the key to survival in the state, the Restoration
Government has massively invested in the sector and stressed the need for the
people of the state to support its efforts to diversify the state economy.
Also in his speech, the Chairman of the
occasion, the Head of Service, Rev. Thomas Zidafamor explained that before oil
was discovered in Nigeria; agriculture was the main stay of the country which
also created a lot of employment opportunities for Nigerians.
Zidafamor also
urged Bayelsans to applaud the restoration government of Governor Dickson.
Highpoint of the programme was questions and
answer as winners were given packaged fish gifts produced by the ministry.
