Activist Wants FG To Implement 65 Years Retirement Age For Core Civil Servants

An activist and Chairman of Trade Union Congress ( TUC)  in Bayelsa state,Comrade Julius Laye has appealed to the federal government to consider the implementation of 65 years retirement age and 40 years of service for core civil servants in the country as a matter of urgent.

Comrade Laye who made the appeal while addressing journalists in his office, Yenagoa., said the appeal became necessary in order to give them sense of belonging like their counterpart  working in the public service.

He queried why the disparity between civil  servants working in the core service and the public service.

He pointed out emphatically stating that both possess the same educational qualification and cognate experience on the job.

Laye insisted extension of years of service to go round as it has been done in other sectors of the public service in the country.

He said the move would enable those civil servants coming up get to their peak and give back the experience they have gathered to the incoming ones.

"We are insisting that the 65 years retirement age and 40 years of service should be spread to every civil servants in this country. Because a lot of civil servants are coming up, and it is when they become Assistant Director, Deputy Director, Director and Permanent Secretary that they can give back what they have gathered within this period. So, when you begin to disengage them you don't give room for the  incoming  to learn and gain experience.

For instance, in some states for the past 10 to 15 years there is no employment. And when those who has expertise knowledge retired and when you open door for employment, you will see that there are no people on ground to educate these people.This is where policies are turn into implementation strategy.It has ethics and these are the people to continue, "he explained.
