INEC Trains Staff on Data Protection Compliance

 Abuja,the Independent National Electoral Commission, FCT, on Saturday has trained its staff on data protection and compliance to strengthen the security of voter information and official documents.

The one-day workshop, which took place at the INEC FCT Conference Hall, was organized by INEC FCT and facilitated by Mr. Anthony Abodunrin Oni, a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Human Resources Management and a data protection expert.

In his opening remarks, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, INEC-FCT, represented by the Administrative Secretary, Mrs. Bimbo Oladunjoye, said the training targeted staff directly responsible for voter data management. She noted it was aimed at updating them on data protection laws and the legal consequences of breaches. She urged trainees to use the opportunity to upskill their knowledge for integrity and accountability in public data management

The training, delivered in two sessions, covered data protection rights, core principles, and practical guidelines for handling official information. The second session focused on the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 and other compliance requirements.

Through group exercises and case studies on voter register management and handling of sensitive documents, staff demonstrated improved awareness of legal and ethical responsibilities around data security. Key risks highlighted included unauthorized access, data leakage, and improper storage or disposal of materials.

Mr. Oni emphasized best practices on password management, access control, secure filing, and prompt reporting of data breaches.

At the end of the training session, the INEC FCT presented souvenirs to the facilitator and group photographs were taken.
